Boat/Fishing Safety Tips When Kids Are in the Boat

Making family memories is one of the most common reasons we hear about for why people bought a boat. Not every family is able to own such a unique luxury item, so children enjoying quality family time on the water gives them wonderful, exciting memories they will cherish for the rest of their lives whether it's your boat or a rental. Also, the thrill of being able to invite friends on such boat trips helps strengthen those social ties too.

The last thing you want is disaster. That's why it is important to ensure children are safe while on board your watercraft. There is no substitute or shortcut for protecting kids and preventing accidents. Boat & RV Accessories is here to help you learn how to keep children safe while they are aboard your boat. We are only scratching the surface with the basics here, but let this be your starting point.

  1. Swimming lessons

Ideally, before children even get on the dock, they should know the basics of swimming. Experts highlight five survival skills:

  • Stepping or jumping into water above their head, then returning to the surface.
  • Turning around in the water, orienting to safety.
  • Floating or treading water.
  • Combining breathing with forward movement.
  • Exiting the water.

If kids aren't currently able to do those tasks, then they need extra attention and floatation aids. Make sure they wear personal flotation devices while on docks or marinas.

  1. Life jackets and PFDs

Not all swimming toys or floats can prevent drowning like a life jacket or other personal floatation device. Using one should be mandatory. Make sure they fit properly, or they will slip right out.

Kids of all ages may have issues with life jackets. They may not want to wear them, or try loosening them. Do not compromise on this. We understand how disciplining can make family time frustrating, but an antsy kid in a life jacket is better than an injured or endangered kid.

  1. Stay seated when moving

Not all boats have seat belts or other safety restraints similar to cars. That's why it is absolutely critical to make sure children keep their butts in seats while moving, no matter the speed. Additionally, this is the most important time for them to wear a life jacket. If they fall out of the boat while moving, the life jacket will keep them afloat until you can swing back around. This is also why you should follow all the rules of operating a boat. Observing those rules keeps people safe.

  1. Swim time

When swimming in an open body of water, stick to designated swimming areas as much as possible. Such areas are usually close to shore. If you decide to swim in open water, prepare your child for it. Let them know that open water is nothing like a swimming pool - there are currents, uneven surfaces (if any), limited visibility, undertow and underwater animals present.

  1. Water rescue

You may not be able to prevent everything, despite following these rules to a T. Prepare for the worst by learning CPR and basic water rescue skills. Knowing those skills can prevent further injury or loss of life while attempting to save someone.
