Fall Camping Tips | What to Pack for a Fall Camping, Meal Ideas and More | KOA Camping Blog

Boat & RV Accessories can show you why camping in the fall is a fantastic idea.

Camping is usually associated with summer, because that's the most convenient time for vacations for many. Summer temperatures enable a lot of fun activities based around water, from adventuring on lakes and rivers to enjoying the campground swimming pool.

But if you are interested in a different outdoor experience, autumn has a lot to offer. We have a list of fall camping activities that make an adventure after August absolutely exciting.

Autumn Advantages

The biggest difference is that temperatures are lower during the fall. While that means swimming may not be practical, and you'll be sleeping in a chilly environment, it opens the doors to so many other options for a variety of reasons:

  • Prime camping spots are easier to get, and you likely won't be sharing space with noisy neighbors.
  • Off-season discounts can range from a nice bonus to absolutely ridiculous, so your money pays for more vacation.
  • Most summer pests, including mosquitoes, are done for the year. (Fall is a busy season for ticks, however, so take your same summertime precautions against those little bloodsuckers.)
  • Reduced daylight makes sunrises later and increases time for night-based activities.

With that in mind, consider some of these fall activities for your next camping trip.

Fall Color

Enjoying the annual turning of the leaves from a car or trail is one thing, but imagine the thrill of waking up underneath those glowing red, orange and yellow leaves. Fall camping makes this dream possible. Because it is hard to plan a vacation based on the turning of the leaves, consider a weekend adventure at a nearby tourist trap for this.

And during the day, hiking underneath those leaves is an incredible experience. Because the temperatures are lower, you can enjoy the activity without excessive sweating. Forests have an entirely different environment in the fall, with all sorts of wonderful earthen smells and feels.

Stargazing

More night means more practical stargazing, and finding a light-free place to camp is not difficult. Autumn features a few great meteor showers, too.

Cold-weather Drinks

While you might enjoy a few s'mores during summer, campfires are perfect for hot drinks such as ciders, hot chocolate and more. Nothing warms us up quite like a wonderful beverage, and enjoying them in front of a campfire is memory-making. That same campfire can be used to make delicious chili, stew and other hearty entrees, as well.

Fall Fishing

At this time, game fish are packing on weight for the upcoming winter, so a fall fishing expedition can result in a fantastic haul. The activity requires some different bait choices, so get some help from your favorite outdoor supplier. But even if you don't catch a thing, remember what they say about bad fishing days being better than good work days.

If you love snapping shots on your phone, you'll find so many beautiful subjects in fall's beautiful light. It really is different, and the science is simple: The sun never gets as high in the sky as it does during summer. That gives you more of a golden glow throughout more of the day.
